Céline Dion and Deadpool Are a Match Made in Melodramatic Heaven [VIDEO]

Céline Dion has found a worthy new collaborator in . . . Deadpool. Yes, the dramatic chanteuse has written a ballad titled “Ashes” for the upcoming superhero movie Deadpool 2, releasing an accompanying music video on Thursday with all her usual melodramatic trappings. Incredibly soft lighting? Check. Passionate gesticulating on a gorgeous, empty stage? Check. Deadpool doing an interpretive, balletic rendition in the background? Check! And they said Avengers: Infinity War was the most ambitious crossover event in history.

The pairing is a perfect send-up of both Dion’s reputation as a ballad queen and Deadpool’s love of sweet, sweet irony. At the end of the music video, Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) rises from the audience, cheering Dion on—then asks her to do another take because it was “too good.”

“Why?” she asks.

“This is Deadpool 2, not Titanic,” Deadpool responded. “You’re at like an 11. We need to get you down to a five—five and a half tops. Just phone it in.”

“Listen, this thing only goes to 11,” Dion rebounds. “So beat it, Spider-Man.”

This perfect, made-for-the-Internet pairing is enough to mourn the fact that there might not be a third Deadpool movie after all is said and done. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds said, “I don’t know that there would be a Deadpool 3. I really don’t.”

“I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him,” he continued. “I don’t think that you can keep doing that. I do see him as being a part of X-Force, obviously. I would love to see him in a team-up sort of thing, like a mano a mano or a great female character from the X-Men universe. I just think if you’re going to do another Deadpool solo film, you’ve got to really, like, get that budget down to nothing and just swing for the fences, and break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no one else can do.”

The first Deadpool was a massive breakthrough when it was released in 2016. It was rated R (a rarity for a superhero movie), it was released in February (a rarity for a blockbuster hopeful, typically released in the summer), and it went on to earn more than $783 million at the worldwide box office. Deadpool 2, set for a May 18 release date, is similarly headed for a massive opening weekend. Treasure the “Merc with the Mouth”’s solo universe—featuring special guest Céline Dion—while you still can.
