Forget tomorrow’s big commercial love fest – today is all about celebrating your best gal pals. 13 February is Galentine’s Day, the day before V-Day.
It’s the best day of the year (according to Parks and Recreation’s Leslie Knope), because it’s a day entirely dedicated to celebrating friendships instead of romance. Which is useful for those of us who have incredible friends but currently find ourselves sans lovers.
Leslie celebrated it onscreen in the best way possible: gathering up all her female friends for a waffle-centric breakfast. At said breakfast, the ladies exchanged gifts and gave each other compliments. It was a truly beautiful occasion.
So how do you get involved in the celebrations? It’s simple – just gather your closest friends together, get a load of food and/or booze, and you’re set. It’s perfect because everyone’s free the day before Valentine’s; your coupled mates might be busy tomorrow evening but they’ve literally got no excuse tonight. Some women give gifts but that’s entirely optional. We’re not talking mega-spenny here – it’s definitely the thought that counts here. Maybe a nice plant for their new pad, or a mix-tape of your favourite high school/uni tunes. Or food. Everyone loves food.
It’s not an anti-Valentine’s thing. You celebrate Galentine’s Day and then Valentine’s Day. Or just Galentine’s Day. Your choice. Today is not a day for plotting how you’re going to ruin your ex’s life. But remember, this is a celebration of platonic, female friendship. So don’t be that person who brings their boyfriend along to the celebrations.
