Kelly Clarkson Claims She Didn’t Want to Win AMERICAN IDOL

Kelly Clarkson is a star today because she won the first season of American Idol, but now she says that if it had been up to her, she would have preferred not to win.

In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, Kelly claims that before the finale, she and Justin Guarini, who ended up coming in second, had a conversation in which she told him, “I don’t want to win.” Why? “Because we found out we had to do a movie,” she explains.

“He really wanted to do a movie,” she adds. “And I really didn’t want to do a movie. I was like, ‘It would be really super cool if I got second and you got first, because the winner has to do the movie and the second one doesn’t.’”

Kelly ended up winning, of course, and then both of them starred in the unbelievably bad film From Justin to Kelly. How bad? She once told Time magazine that she’d never tell her daughter that it even exists.

Kelly says in retrospect that of course she’s grateful that she won, and she hopes to help another deserving talent succeed when she coaches The Voice next year. But she does admit to EW that she was “kind of bummed” that when ABC approached her for the American Idol reboot, she couldn’t do it because of The Voice.

“I hope it’s super-successful,” she tells EW. “Would it have been awesome to come back to the show that started me and help give someone that start? Yes! But that doesn’t mean I can’t do the same thing on The Voice. That’s my goal.”
