This change is definitely a (great) sign of the times!
Netflix plans to cut back on depictions of smoking in their original shows after a Truth Initiative study named the streaming giant for a surge in smoking on shows like Orange Is The New Black and Stranger Things.
92% of TV shows across broadcast, cable and streaming that are most popular with young people feature tobacco prominently. That’s a 16% increase since our report last year and it’s likely putting those young people at greater risk of becoming smokers. https://t.co/IAArBKDQMG

As with all things, the Internet had a lot to say about the upcoming changes.
If smoking presented for historical accuracy, it shouldn’t be cut. Instead, add a message to the beginning the episode stating smoking is bad. Drugs are bad, too, but there are whole shows whose existence depends on it being shown. Crap like this is stupid.

Stranger Things it makes sense as an 80s depiction. Russian Doll- many characters were smoking cigarettes & indoors no less. I haven’t seen someone smoke a cigarette indoors at a party since 1996! Pot yes, cigarettes no. Plus it’s a continuity nightmare and largely unnecessary.

No word yet of when the cut-back of smoking in their shows will occur.
