Winnipeg has its first kid mayor.
Mayor Brian Bowman announced Nazar Viznytya is the new Kid Mayor, after being selected by a panel of judges.
Nazar will join Mayor Bowman Tuesday, May 15, for a full day of mayoring, including help run Tuesday’s Executive Policy Committee. There, he will tell EPC his plans to make the city a better place to live.
The 12-year-old submitted his application for the honour after being encouraged to do so by his teacher. His pitch focused on improving downtown safety — largely by suggesting more streetlights.
Kid Mayor was a contest launched earlier this year. About 250 submissions were received.
Gabi Wagner has been identified as Deputy Kid Mayor.
Her suggestions for the city included equal pay for men and women, encouraging residents to spend more time outdoors, improved street safety and recommended the city plant more trees to help provide fresh air, and asked for more outdoor celebrations “so we can interact with one another and use less electronics.”
