This year, Sofia Bieber, a speedskater from Winnipeg, was team Manitoba’s opening ceremony flagbearer for the 2023 Canada Games in P.E.I. Manitoba had eighteen speed skaters representing our province – eight long trackers and ten short trackers. Sofia would go on to win our first Gold and ended up winning 5 medals, 3 Gold and 2 Silver! One of the races was the mass start, which as you can image is like organized chaos.
“This race was a very unexpected win for me, due to the fact that I have not had much success in the mass start race before,” said Bieber. “I just had so much adrenaline going during that race, just because it was so cold and it’s the last race of our competition, and I just really gave it all that I had.”
Bieber also won gold in the women’s 1,000m and 500m, silver in the 1,500m and teamed up with Robyn Salie, Lindsay Smart and Skylar Van Horne for silver in team pursuit.
Sofia tells us what it was like and what she plans to do in the future.
