After his wife died, George Dowling, a Rhode Island man needed help to keep his spirits bright during the Christmas season. After losing his wife, Lucille after 70 years of marriage, the holidays just weren’t the same. Christmas was her favorite holiday, but in 2013, when she died less than a month before the holiday, he took down all their decorations and decided not to celebrate.
This year, the 10th anniversary of Lucille’s passing from Alzheimer’s, George’s family — and thousands of strangers — went the extra mile to make this a holiday season merry. Charlene Fletcher, got involved, asking on social media if people “could find it in your hearts” to “make his holiday season , it didn’t take long before the cards started coming in droves.
