This week is National Drowning Prevention Week, and the Lifesaving Society Manitoba is bringing awareness to the issues around water safety.
“Over 450 people fatally drown annually in Canada, making it the second leading cause of unintentional death for children and the third leading cause of unintentional death for adults,” said Lifesaving Society Executive Director Stacey Grocholski. “In particular, Indigenous, and new Canadians have a disproportionately high mortality burden.”
To help reduce drowning amongst newcomers, the City of Winnipeg has released a series of videos on water safety in Arabic, English French, Punjab, and Tagalog.
The videos can be viewed by clicking here.
In recognition of National Drowning Prevention Week, the Lifesaving Society logo will appear tonight on the Manitoba Legislature. Also the evening, the Winnipeg sign at The Forks and the Esplinade Riel will be lit up in blue in recognition.
