Prince Harry’s Invictus Games return for their sixth year in Düsseldorf, Germany from Sept 9 -16/23. Winnipegger, Lealand Muller was an Army vehicle technician and served for 8 years, before a tragic accident left him paralyzed and change his life forever. Muller said he was told he wouldn’t walk again and he could no longer serve in the military, he said it was at this moment when he lost his identity. Instead of giving up, Lealand gave into the goal of walking again. His motivation for applying to the Invictus Games was to find new connections, “I wanted to meet and learn from people with similar experiences and the ‘never give up’ mindset. I really missed that one of a kind ‘tough love’ found only in the military community. I was eager to meet people who would challenge me to leave my comfort zone and help me to push through the mental barriers I had created for myself.” Muller is one of only 30 chosen out of 500 applications!
I had a chance to talk w/ Leland about his journey.
Lealand is participating in Hand Cycling, Wheelchair Basketball, and Discus and isn’t the only Winnipegger competing in the games. Lana Taylor, a retired army sergeant, who lives with multiple sclerosis, is also headed to Germany as part of Team Canada. Good Luck Lealand and Lana!!
